It's that season again:  meetings with brokers, new insurance contracts and bracing for the inevitable premium increases to apply to 2019 renewals.  Given the numerous actions taken over the last year in Washington D.C., many employers rightly fear they may face their highest spike in rates since 2010.

Those employers have a variety of cost containment strategies available to them, and some have already started implementing.  Within plan-design, Consumer-Directed Health Programs like High-Deductible Health Plans, Heath Savings Accounts, and Health Reimbursement Accounts, are increasing in popularity.  In examination of wellness, Health Risk Assessments, Biometric Testing, Tobacco Cessation and Telemedicine are also seeing accelerating employer adoption. 

But what about employee adoption?  Too often, employers are seeing disappointing first-year adoption rates by their employees, and lagging "pickup" for these plans in later years as well.  Most industry experts agree the number one reason for lack of adoption is the complexity of these new plans, employee lack of understanding of how these plans work and what kind of financial risks they are assuming under these new plans.  Simply stated, consumers don't buy what they don't understand, and when it comes to benefits enrollment, employees are consumers!

Thankfully, employers have a powerful tool available to them to address these concerns:  the Learning Management System.  With a properly deployed LMS in conjunction with SCORM- or AICC-compliant content and a creative incentive system in place, HR professionals can improve employee understanding of their available plan options significantly, and see increased adoption as a result.

About the Speaker

Bob Greene

Bob Greene currently serves as Channels Manager and Sales Trainer at Ascentis. Bob’s 38 years in the human capital management industry have been spent in practitioner, consultant and vendor/partner roles. As a practitioner, he managed payroll for a 5,000-person bank in New Jersey. As consultant, he spent 8 years advising customers in HRMS, and payroll and benefits system design as well as acquisition strategies. Bob also built a strategic HCM advisory practice for Xcelicor (now Deloitte Consulting).

As vendor/partner, he has had prominent roles in sales support, marketing and product management at several companies and currently Ascentis. Bob recently re-joined the Editorial Board of IHRIM's Workforce Solutions Review journal, as Contributing Editor. His experience also includes two years as Adjunct Lecturer in HRIS at Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois. In addition to his 38 years of experience, Bob also holds a BA in English from Rutgers University.
